Panchakarma is a primary purification and detoxification process in Ayurveda. The processes involved help eliminate toxins; build the immune system; improve digestion, metabolism and vitality. Detoxification helps with deficiency diseases as absorption improves. Also boosts mental clarity.
There are five basic types of Panchakarma therapies:
Vamana
One of the five Panchakarmas, Vamana is an Ayurvedic treatment for aggravated kapha dosha. It is a medicated emesis or therapeutic vomiting that helps remove toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. This therapy is done for both preventive & curative purposes. Vamana results in clarity of thought and stability of bodily tissues. It strengthens the sense organs and digestive capacity. Delays the aging process.
Virechana
Virechana is an important bio-cleansing method for expulsion of excess pitta through the anal route. It helps to cleanse the gastro-intestinal tract of toxins and excess pitta. It alleviates gynecological disorders, cures mild to chronic skin disorders and liver disorders. It is helpful in abdominal tumors and ulcers.
Vasti
An Ayurvedic detoxification procedure which flushes out toxins and vitiated vata dosha by introducing herbal oils or herbal liquids through the anus, vaginal canal or urethra. Vasti has been found effective for muscular-skeletal disorders, paralysis, neurological disorders, gynecological disorders, auto-immune problems to name a few. It boosts energy, decelerates the aging process, and alleviates symptoms of constipation and piles.
Nasya
Nasya is one of the five Panchakarma therapies which specifically targets the head. According to Ayurveda, the nose is the pathway to the brain, mind, consciousness and inner chemistry. Nasya uses this pathway to get rid of imbalances related to memory, thoughts and emotions. Any issues above the clavicle bone will be effectively dealt with - Nasya works on disorders of the ear, nose and throat.
Raktamokshana
Rakta means blood, mokshan means to leave. Raktamokshana means to let the blood out. In other words, the therapy involves bloodletting. Blood is discharged from the body, thereby reducing the volume of toxins in blood borne disorders. Raktamokshana treats skin diseases, allergies and edema. Provides a solution for localized pain. Typically ministers to conditions triggered by acidity, such as arthritis and headaches.
